Meet Dr. Ihekweazu
Ugo Ihekweazu, MD, FAAOS
Dr. Ugo Ihekweazu (E-heck-wa-zoo) is a highly respected orthopedic surgeon based at Texas Orthopedic Hospital in Houston’s Texas Medical Center. He specializes in computer-assisted and robotic hip and knee replacement, and is recognized worldwide for his skill, precision, and ability to deliver outstanding results. Patients from around the globe seek him out for his reputation as one of the most gifted joint replacement surgeons practicing today.
A true innovator, Dr. Ihekweazu made history as the first surgeon in the world to perform a partial knee replacement using the Velys robotic platform—an advanced system that eliminates the need for a pre-operative CT scan. Over the course of his career, he has performed thousands of computer navigated and robotic hip and knee replacements, helping patients regain mobility, walk more naturally, and return to active, pain-free lives.
In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Ihekweazu is an international leader in technology-driven joint replacement. He travels worldwide to teach surgeons advanced robotic techniques and frequently welcomes peers from across the globe who come to observe his procedures firsthand. His work extends beyond the operating room—he has helped develop new technologies, published extensively on surgical methods (including pioneering a technique for Inverse kinematic alignment in robotic total knee replacement), and serves on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
Houston is home for Dr. Ihekweazu. He completed his undergraduate and medical education at Cornell University, trained in orthopedic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, pursued an AO Trauma Fellowship in Geneva, Switzerland, and went on to a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement at the world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. While his expertise and global recognition draw patients in, it’s his compassionate and personalized care that leaves a lasting impression.
In addition to his thriving surgical practice, Dr. Ihekweazu maintains a rigorous schedule of academic and scientific pursuits. He regularly contributes to scientific literature, acts as a reviewer for the esteemed Journal of Arthroplasty, presents at national and international conferences, and spearheads the Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Fellowship training program at the Fondren Orthopedic Group.
Dr. Ihekweazu is deeply committed to his local community, engaging in mentorship, teaching, and volunteer activities throughout the Greater Houston area. His wife, Faith, is a distinguished Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Texas Children’s Hospital.
